Set up step by step. Use with confidence every day.
Where to find it

DinoX lets you send messages, share pictures and files, and make voice and video calls. You need an XMPP account. XMPP connects different providers: you and your contacts do not have to use the same provider.
Your XMPP address is technically called a JID, for example bob@dinox.im. It looks like an email address, but belongs to a chat account. You can only use an existing email address if your provider has explicitly created an XMPP account with that same address. Your email password does not automatically work in DinoX.
The pictures show real DinoX windows with demo accounts. Enter your own details. Colours, window controls and available features can vary with your operating system, package and server. Select a picture to open the larger view.
Bob and Anna are examples in this guide. Enter your own XMPP address during setup and ask contacts for theirs. The demo accounts shown are not support addresses.
Choose a package that matches your operating system. A .deb filename does not mean that the package works on every Debian-based distribution.
AppImage and Flatpak are not tied to the Debian or Ubuntu package manager. They are also intended for other Linux distributions, including Fedora and openSUSE with RPM packages. You do not convert them to RPM. Matching processor architecture and system requirements still matter; this DinoX package has not been tested on every older distribution.
Flatpak support must be installed, and the required runtime is installed separately. An AppImage starts directly as an executable file but still needs basic system libraries. A DEB must match the stated distribution and version.
What do the choices mean?
Windows
Extract the whole ZIP. Keep the extracted folder together and open dinox.exe inside it. Do not move the EXE on its own: it needs the other files.
Ubuntu 24.04 / Linux Mint 22
Install the DinoX DEB with your package manager. From the download folder you can also use: sudo apt install ./dinox_2.3.2_amd64.deb. APT obtains required libraries from your configured repositories.
Debian 13 based on Trixie
Use AppImage or Flatpak. The Ubuntu DEB requires different library versions. Do not try to bypass missing libgpgme11t64 or libicu74 with development packages, Ubuntu repositories or a forced installation.
AppImage
Allow the file to run as a program in its file properties, then open it. The additional .sources.tar.xz archive is not needed to run the application.
Flatpak
Open the .flatpak file with a Flatpak-capable software manager, or install it with flatpak install --user ./dinox-2.3.2-x86_64.flatpak. Flatpak also installs the required runtime. Its local data is separate from DEB and AppImage.

Understand the two passwords
Where to find it
First launch → Set Password
The first password protects DinoX data on this computer. It is not your XMPP account password. It covers the accounts you set up in this local DinoX data directory.
Keep this password safe. Reinstalling cannot unlock data protected by a forgotten password. Make a backup before resetting data or moving to another computer.
Take care during normal unlocking: after three failed attempts, this version triggers a local emergency wipe. Do not repeatedly guess the password. The special unlock flow after a restore is exempt.
What to do
Enter a password you can keep safe in both fields.
Choose “Set Password”. Use this password to unlock DinoX on later launches.

Where to find it
Incoming request in a chat
This concerns your online status: may this person see whether you are available? Accepting the request does not determine whether messages use OMEMO, OpenPGP or no end-to-end encryption.
You can accept or decline the request. Check the address if you do not recognise the person. Sharing online status can also determine access to an XMPP feed restricted to contacts.

Send your first message with OMEMO
Where to find it
Open the contact → Lock beside the message field
OMEMO is normally the default for new conversations unless you changed this account’s default. Check the actual choice at the lock. OMEMO encrypts messages for the devices of the people involved.
Contact permission alone is not enough: devices need to supply the necessary keys. If DinoX reports missing or unaccepted keys, open the contact’s encryption page. Do not switch to unencrypted messages just to bypass that notice.
What to do
Select “OMEMO” at the lock, or check that it is already selected.
Type your message at the bottom. Enter sends it; Shift+Enter inserts a line break.
After sending, check the message state. Sent, delivered and read are different states; a read receipt appears only when supported and allowed.

Organise, mute and remove contacts
Where to find it
Chat → three dots → Conversation Details; or Preferences → Contacts
Conversation Details contains information about this contact and chat. “Preferences → Contacts” manages contacts across your accounts. Read the confirmation text before any removal.
What do the choices mean?
Pin and mute
Pinning keeps the chat near the top of your list. Muting suppresses notifications; messages can still arrive.
Bell and privacy
Use the bell to choose notifications for this chat. Details also provides per-chat typing notifications, read receipts and retention settings.
Edit alias
Set your own display name for the contact in contact management. This does not change their XMPP address.
Block
Blocking one contact differs from blocking their entire domain. A domain block also affects other people at that provider. Remove the block to undo it.
Remove contact
Removing through chat details or contact selection also removes the history stated in that confirmation. The bin under Preferences → Contacts preserves history. “Close Conversation” only removes the open chat from the list.

Join or create a group
Where to find it
Group-of-people icon → Join Group
A group has its own address, for example treff@gruppen.dinox.im. Ask for the complete room address and any password. The part after @ may differ from your account address. Public rooms and private groups have different access rules.
Encrypted groups need suitable room settings and members’ device keys. Selecting a lock does not automatically make a public room private.
What to do
Open the group icon. Select a saved group or enter the room address.
Choose your account, room nickname and, if needed, the room password.
For a new room, choose “Add Group”. The server determines whether you may create a room.
After joining, read the topic, member list and any notice about visibility of your address.
What do the choices mean?
New group: address, alias and nickname
The room address identifies the room. Alias is your local display name for it. Nick is the name you use inside the room. An optional room picture can be selected in the form.
Private Room
Select deliberately when creating a room. DinoX requests the required private-room settings and checks the server result. Rejection or unconfirmed configuration does not mean a successfully private room.

Where to find it
Group icon → magnifying glass → Search all public XMPP servers
Enable public search and enter at least two characters, such as a topic. DinoX queries the external search.jabber.network service, which receives your search term. It finds public rooms in that service’s index; despite the switch label, it is not a complete list of all XMPP servers.
A result is neither an invitation nor an endorsement. Read the description, language and room address. A password or membership may still be required. An empty result can also be caused by the search service.

What do the choices mean?
OMEMO

OMEMO: inspect devices and verify keys
Where to find it
Chat → Encryption → Devices → Manage Key
A contact may use several devices, each with its own key. Accepted or Trusted means DinoX may use that key. Verified additionally means you deliberately checked its fingerprint. A green symbol alone does not replace that comparison.
Compare the complete fingerprint with the person, for example in person or through an already verified channel. A device number identifies an entry but does not prove who owns the device.
What to do
Open the correct contact’s encryption page and select the device.
Open Manage Key, then fingerprint verification.
Compare every character. Confirm as verified only if they match. If they differ, cancel and check with the person.
What do the choices mean?
Reject key
Rejects this device for encrypted communication. Other devices of the same contact have their own settings.
Reset session
Rebuilds the device’s encryption session on a subsequent message. Intended for specific delivery problems, not routine maintenance.
Long inactive / Remove device
Not seen for a long time does not prove a device is lost. Removal deletes its local key and session data. An active device may appear again. Confirm using the top button in the final step.
Reset all sessions
Affects the contact’s displayed sessions. It is different from deleting the account or all DinoX data.

OpenPGP is a separate option alongside OMEMO. If methods or keys do not match on both sides, simply switching the chat lock will not help. First agree which OpenPGP variant the contact’s application uses.
What to do
Choose your account and create a key or import an existing one in key management.
Select the appropriate own key for this account. Keep the private key and its backup confidential.
Agree the mode with the contact. With OpenPGP for XMPP, publish your public key using the provided action.
Inspect the discovered or assigned key in the contact’s encryption details. Compare the complete fingerprint.
Then choose OpenPGP using the chat lock and follow the displayed status.
What do the choices mean?
Legacy OpenPGP · XEP-0027
Compatibility mode for older XMPP applications. Key association and retrieval differ from the newer method and may involve a keyserver.
OpenPGP for XMPP · XEP-0373/0374
Publishes public keys through the XMPP account and uses the corresponding message format. The server and contact must support the required features.
Import, export, delete and revoke
Import loads a key; export writes a file. A public export may be shared; an export including a private key is a confidential backup. Local deletion is not revocation. Revocation declares a key invalid and must be deliberate.

Login protection (MITM): understand status and choices
Where to find it
Preferences → Accounts → your account → Login Protection (MITM)
This additional protection helps prevent a sign-in being relayed over another connection. Technically, this is called channel binding. It protects this account’s sign-in; OMEMO and OpenPGP protect your messages.
Server Support shows this account’s result: a green check for available support, a red cross for missing support. Not yet checked is not a confirmed no. Current Connection states whether protection is actually active for the present sign-in.
What to do
Read server support. If unknown or outdated, choose Check Now. Only this account reconnects.
Choose the desired mode. DinoX checks the choice and automatically reconnects the account after a change.
Read the result and Current Connection. An unavailable protection feature cannot be treated as successfully enabled.
What do the choices mean?
Use when available
Uses additional protection for supported sign-ins. This is the default for newly configured accounts. The choice appears after support is confirmed.
Require for sign-in
This account may sign in only with additional protection. If support later disappears, sign-in is refused. A recovery action deliberately relaxes this requirement.
PLAIN password authentication
A separate advanced-account exception for servers without SCRAM. The password travels inside the TLS connection. Off by default; once SCRAM is confirmed, PLAIN stays blocked. Do not enable it for unrelated sign-in failures.

DNSSEC, DANE and the server certificate
Where to find it
Preferences → Accounts → your account → Connection Security
DinoX must find the correct server and check its identity. DNSSEC validates protected information about server addresses. DANE can additionally specify which server certificate is accepted. These settings are per account and do not change message encryption.
What to do
Choose the mode and, if needed, a resolver URL.
Choose Apply. This saves both settings only for this account and reconnects it when enabled.
Read the result. Another account’s green status does not prove this account is working.
What do the choices mean?
Off
Uses normal TLS certificate checks. This does not automatically make the connection unencrypted.
Check automatically
Uses available validated DNS and DANE information. Missing signatures differ from failed validation: errors or failed lookups are not silently ignored.
Require DNSSEC and DANE
Connects only when the required evidence is present and valid. Without it, this account remains disconnected.
HTTPS DNS resolver URL
An additional service returning DNS answers over HTTPS. Enter a suitable resolver URL. Without one, direct connections use system DNS. Tor or SOCKS5 requires an HTTPS resolver through the proxy.
Server certificate
Shows details such as issuer, validity and fingerprint. This is the server certificate, not the contact’s OMEMO key. Check certificate errors with the provider.
See it in DinoX

Tor routes connections through the Tor network. A SOCKS5 proxy is an intermediary you specify. Neither replaces an XMPP account or message encryption. Integrated Tor is an application-wide setting and can override an account’s own proxy.
Lyrebird is the included helper for certain Tor bridges. It does not require a second chat account. Bridges are particularly useful when ordinary Tor connections are blocked.
What to do
For integrated Tor, open the Tor tab and enable it. Wait for connection progress.
If Tor is blocked, enable Use Bridges. Enter a valid list or request obfs4 or WebTunnel bridges.
Use Firewall Mode only with bridges on port 80 or 443. Read restart and status messages after changes.
For an account’s own proxy, enter its SOCKS5 address, port and required credentials in that account’s settings, then check its status.
What do the choices mean?
DNSSEC/DANE through a proxy
Also configure an HTTPS DNS resolver as described under Connection Security. Use a numeric proxy IP address where required by the interface.
MQTT and local devices
MQTT has its own broker settings. Local brokers may use a direct local route, so a green Tor status is not proof of routing for every external service.

Back up and recover an OpenPGP key on the server
Where to find it

This stores an encrypted backup of the selected account’s private OpenPGP key on its server. It differs from publishing the public key and from a full DinoX data backup.
Importing or fetching a key from the server does not automatically activate it. After retrieval, check the key selected for this account and the mode it is published for.
What to do
Open the correct account and your own key. Choose Backup Secret Key to Server.
Copy the displayed backup code and keep it safe. Then confirm upload and wait for success. Exactly this code is required for recovery.

Prepare microphone, speakers and camera
Where to find it
Preferences → Audio & Video
DinoX distinguishes call devices from recorded-message devices. A working voice message does not automatically prove the correct call microphone is selected. System Default uses the operating system’s selected device.
What to do
Choose the microphone, speakers and camera under Audio/Video Calls.
Further down, select devices for voice/video messages.
Run the offered tests: listen to the speaker tone, check a short microphone recording and view the camera preview. These tests do not call anyone.
Refresh the device list after connecting a device. Check the camera cover, system permission and whether another application is using the camera.
What do the choices mean?

Call someone and answer a call
Where to find it
Contact chat → phone icon at the top
The phone at the top starts a call. The microphone and camera beside the message field are for recorded messages. The contact needs a reachable client supporting compatible calls.
What to do
Open the correct contact chat. Select the phone and choose the offered audio or video call.
Accept or reject an incoming call. The conversation starts after acceptance.
Mute or unmute the microphone in the call window. The camera has its own on/off control.
Use the microphone and camera device selectors if you need another device. Video effects have a separate button.
End the call with the red hang-up button. Switching chats is not a substitute for hanging up.
What do the choices mean?
No picture
First check the local camera preview, camera cover and selected camera. A black camera image can stay black even when transmission works.
No sound / echo
Check mute, volume and selected devices. Headphones prevent speaker output feeding back into the microphone.
Connection details and encryption
Call-window indicators refer to this call. A green message-encryption indicator alone is not proof for every media path.
Dialpad (DTMF)
For a destination with a telephone menu, the dialpad can send digits, such as choosing a hotline option. This requires a suitable telephony service and does not automatically give DinoX access to the telephone network.

Group calls and inviting another person
Where to find it
Private group chat → call; active call → Add Participant
A group call connects several people. Invite Contact in a text group menu initially invites someone to the room; Add Participant in a call window concerns the active call. These actions are different.
DinoX uses OMEMO v1 for the encrypted MUJI calls described here. A client restricted exclusively to PQ/OMEMO 2 is not automatically compatible. Installing Monocles alone does not determine the mode used in a particular conversation.
What to do
For an existing private room, open the group and choose the offered call action. Check permissions and encryption status.
To extend a one-to-one call, choose Add Participant in the active call window and select a compatible contact.
Wait for invited people to accept. Sending an invitation does not mean someone has joined.
Check the participant list for people actually connected. Microphone, camera and hang-up controls remain in the call window.
What do the choices mean?
If the action is missing or disabled
The current room, permissions or client capabilities do not meet requirements. Describing this flow is not proof that every third-party client combination was tested.
Open or rejoin a call
The call menu may offer to open or join an ongoing group call. After leaving, Rejoin previous group call may appear. If it is no longer available, start a new call; an old history entry alone does not prove a call is active.

Where to find it
Open a contact or group → microphone beside the message field
A voice message is a recording for later listening. It does not call anyone. First open the intended contact or group. For a live conversation, use the phone at the top instead.
Do not leave recording unattended: reaching the five-minute recording limit automatically ends the recording for sending.
What to do
Open the correct chat. Select the microphone at the bottom: recording starts immediately. Allow system permission if needed.
Speak into the microphone; the recording panel shows elapsed time and input level.
Send ends and sends the recording. There is no separate playback-preview step here. Discard throws it away; Escape also cancels.

A feed is a list of new posts, such as news or software releases. You can read posts, send a post to a chat or publish your own posts. These are separate tasks.
First choose the account at the top. Subscriptions and chat destinations belong to this account. A feed subscription is neither group membership nor a contact request.
What do the choices mean?

Automatically post new web articles to a chat
Where to find it
Feeds → Web feeds → Load articles → Automatically post new articles
This automation runs only while DinoX is running and the selected account is connected. It is not a server-hosted bot. Existing articles are skipped when enabling it; new articles are then checked, with up to five queued per check.
What to do
Load the feed first. Choose an interval from 5 minutes to 24 hours; the default is 30 minutes.
Open Automatically post new articles, check the destination and encryption, then confirm with Enable.
Under Subscriptions, inspect the last check time and status. Use Save interval there after changing the interval.

Enter the publisher’s XMPP address here. Leave the advanced node setting unchanged for a personal feed. A PubSub service with another node requires the operator’s details.
A subscription asks the server for notices of new posts. An open subscribed feed refreshes on a server notification; otherwise read it again. Up to 100 recent posts are shown. Images and external content are not loaded automatically.
What to do
Enter the address and choose Read XMPP feed.
Choose Subscribe to this XMPP feed for future notices. The owner may need to approve access first.
Check status under Subscriptions. Read feed opens it; Unsubscribe stops notifications.
If needed, separately share an article to a chat through Preview and share. Subscribing alone sends no chat messages.

Publish your own posts: who can read them?
Where to find it
Feeds → My XMPP feed → Write a post in my feed
Your first published post creates a personal feed on the XMPP server if supported. Give readers the selected account’s XMPP address. They need a feed-capable client and access permission.
XMPP feed posts are not end-to-end encrypted. Without Public feed checked, contacts you have allowed to see your online status can read it. This is not automatically every saved address. Checking it makes the feed publicly readable.
Visibility applies to the entire feed. This writing dialog cannot change an existing feed’s visibility. DinoX currently does not show a subscriber list.
What to do
Check the account and open the writing dialog. Choose visibility for a new feed.
Enter title and text. Only Publish places the post on the server.
Retrieve the result with Read my feed. Use the remove action on your own posts to delete one.
For contact access: contact chat → Conversation Details → About → Contact permissions. Accept an appropriate presence request or choose Also share my online status when adding the contact.

DinoX can manage several XMPP accounts. Contacts, keys and connection rules belong to individual accounts. Check the address before making changes. Use the plus in the account overview to add another account.
Temporarily disabling an account differs from removing it. Local removal does not automatically delete the account at its provider. Read the confirmation carefully.
What do the choices mean?
XMPP address and local alias
The address identifies the account. A local alias helps you distinguish your own accounts.
Password
Changes the provider account password: enter the current password and the new password twice, then confirm. Other devices must subsequently use the new account password. The local DinoX database password remains unchanged.
Connection status
Shows whether this account is connected or why sign-in failed. Other accounts can have a different state.
Public profile
Edit your picture, name, nickname and optional details. Only enter a birthday, address, phone or job information if you want to share it. Check “Public Access” and “Share with Contacts”, then save changes.

Set up notifications and sounds
Where to find it
Main menu → Preferences → General; bell at the top of a chat
Notifications alert you to new messages. The general setting applies to DinoX as a whole. You can additionally set each contact and group separately. Your online status is a separate setting.
Check three places in this order: the general DinoX setting, the affected chat’s bell and your operating system’s notification permissions. An enabled chat bell cannot override globally disabled notifications.
What to do
Under General, enable Notifications if DinoX should show alerts for new messages.
Turn Message Notification Sounds on or off separately. Turning sound off is not the same as muting a chat.
Open the desired chat and select the bell at the top. In groups, choose all messages, mentions only or no alerts. Reset to default restores the default behaviour.
Allow DinoX notifications in Windows or your Linux system settings. A system-wide do-not-disturb mode can still suppress alerts.

Your computer, the XMPP server and contacts’ devices may hold different copies of a conversation. Local deletion does not automatically remove every copy. Missing history cannot simply be reloaded without a server archive.
What do the choices mean?

These actions affect the local DinoX data directory. Make a backup before resetting. Selecting an account elsewhere does not restrict these general actions to that account.
What do the choices mean?
Data location
Opens or shows the local data location. Flatpak uses a separate location from a regular installation. Do not delete database files at random while running.
Change database password
Changes the password unlocking local data. Does not change provider account passwords.
Clear cache
Removes cached data as described in the confirmation. Pictures or other content may need to be downloaded again.
Reset database

Factory reset
Removes local accounts and data. Read the exact confirmation first. It does not automatically delete registration at the provider.

Botmother, AI assistant and Telegram
Where to find it
Preferences → General → Botmother; then Accounts → account → Botmother
A bot processes messages or performs configured tasks. You do not need these features for normal chatting. Local Botmother requires DinoX to be running; a separately hosted CloudBot is a different service.
An AI or Telegram integration passes content to the configured service. Deliberately choose destinations, permissions and provider before enabling it. An API token is an access key and does not belong in public chats or pictures.
What to do
Enable Botmother under General. Keep the local API mode for normal local use.
Open Botmother for the intended account. Check account activation and create a bot or select an existing one.
Set the name, permissions and target restrictions. Permit only required actions and save.
Configure and enable additional sections individually. Use status indicators and offered test actions.
What do the choices mean?
AI Assistant
Enter the provider, model, credentials and any custom server address. The AI test question checks a response without sending it to an XMPP chat. Costs and data processing depend on the chosen service.
Telegram bridge
Enter the Telegram bot token, chat ID and offered mode, save and enable. A Telegram chat ID is not an XMPP address. Check destination and direction before real use.
Webhooks and local API
For integrating your own software. A webhook sends events to a configured address. Configure network mode and a TLS certificate only when deliberately granting other devices access. Use the API documentation for concrete programming calls.
CloudBot
An existing hosted bot can be loaded using its management token. Check ownership and status. Local API tokens, CloudBot management tokens and event tokens are different credentials; rotation can invalidate previous access.

Updated 24 October 2026 · DinoX 2.3.2 · Screenshots use demo accounts.
MQTT is often used for sensors and home automation. The broker is the intermediary server. A topic is a named message destination, such as home/temperature. You need the operator’s details; an XMPP account alone is not access to an unrelated MQTT broker.
Standalone means a broker connection independent of your XMPP accounts. An account’s MQTT bot belongs to that account and can use a suitable XMPP-server MQTT service or a custom broker.
What to do
Open the appropriate section. Enter broker address, port, TLS and required credentials as supplied by its operator.
Enable and choose Save & Apply. Read connection status; Reconnect does not replace saving changed values.
Open the MQTT Bot Manager and first subscribe to a known topic. Check the received value from an active sensor.
Use Show Bot in Chat to open the local display. Configure publication and automation rules only after checking destinations.
What do the choices mean?
TLS and DNSSEC/DANE
TLS protects the connection to the broker. Without TLS, credentials and values on a remote connection may travel in plaintext. Additional DNSSEC/DANE settings belong to that broker connection.
Home Assistant Discovery
Announces DinoX as a device to the configured Home Assistant MQTT service. The discovery prefix must match its configuration. This does not replace broker credentials.

First check the account, message and affected function
Note the DinoX version, operating system, package and exact steps to the problem. A picture of the affected setting helps; exclude passwords, private keys and tokens. Describe what you expected and what you actually saw.
What do the choices mean?
Unlock failed
Check the local database password, not the account password. “Invalid key or corrupted” alone does not prove corruption. Do not immediately reset.
One account stays offline
Check account settings and the specific error: internet, credentials, server, proxy or required protection may be involved. Other connected accounts do not prove these credentials are correct.
Encrypted message not received
Check the contact or room, selected method and device keys. Groups need known membership and the actual participants’ keys. Do not delete all keys indiscriminately.
Feed empty or access denied
Check feed address, selected account and read permission. A personal XMPP feed may not exist until its first publication. Subscribing does not create someone else’s feed.
Missing DEB dependency
First compare package and distribution. The Ubuntu package is not the appropriate choice on Debian 13. Use APT on the supported system to resolve dependencies.
Camera or microphone missing
Check system permission, cable, camera cover, device selection and device tests. For Flatpak, also check package permissions.

Reference
What do the choices mean?
XMPP address / JID
bob@dinox.im is an example chat address: bob is the account name, dinox.im the provider. JID is the technical term. Looking like email does not automatically make it an email inbox.
Server / provider
The service your account connects to and which routes messages.
MUC / room
A group chat with its own address and access rules.
MUJI
The method for organising group calls through XMPP rooms.
Fingerprint
A character sequence for comparing a key. Compare all of it, not only the beginning and end.
TLS
Encrypts a connection to a server. End-to-end encryption additionally protects message content between devices.
Subscription
Depending on context, permission to see online status, a feed subscription or an MQTT topic subscription. These three are independent.
Local
On this computer or in this DinoX data directory. Not automatically on the server or other devices.
